Routine vs. Extraordinary Maintenance of galvanic rotors

Routine maintenance—which is preventive and scheduled—includes inspections, cleaning, and the replacement of components subject to wear and tear. It is performed regularly to keep the plating barrels in optimal operating condition and reduce the risk of breakdowns. It certainly requires time, organization, and a budgeted investment. On the other hand, however, it helps prevent machine downtime—which is very costly—and limits unbudgeted expenses.

Extraordinary maintenance, on the other hand, becomes necessary following a malfunction or sudden breakdown. It therefore requires urgent intervention and inevitably results in downtime and unplanned costs.

 

Maintenance of plating barrels: first and foremost, monitor the wear condition

Regularly monitoring the wear level of components allows you to schedule maintenance in advance, since you know the service life of your dryers and how they are being used. This enables you to replace parts prone to wear before they cause malfunctions.

 

Galvanic rotors Maintenance: which components to check

Before a plant shutdown for comprehensive maintenance, it is advisable to carefully inspect all the main components of the rotor.

  1. Cathodic contacts

Remove the contacts and inspect their condition:

  • for dangler contacts, properly strip the wire ends
  • for bar contacts, thoroughly clean the bars and nipples and inspect the condition of the cathodic hub.
  1. Rotation Terminal Blocks

Verify that the pick up contacts ensure a constant power supply to the gearmotor and that no phase is missing.

  1. Transmission Components

Check:

  • pinions
  • intermediate gears
  • Rulon strips for anti-friction, verifying that they are not completely worn out.
  1. Cylinder Panels

Ensure that the circular and lamellar perforations in the cylinders allow for good dragout; check that the holes are not blocked by debris or deposits. Also verify that the panel thickness has not become too thin; this would eliminate the double countersink, which is crucial for the panel’s performance.  It is important to determine in advance whether the cylinder has reached the end of its useful life.

  1. Doors

Check for proper alignment with the cylinder and inspect for any deformation or wear that could compromise the airtight seal.

  1. Bell-shaped parts and wedges

Ensure that the bell-shaped parts and wedges are thoroughly clean and fit together perfectly.

  1. Mechanical Structure

Verify that the drum is properly aligned and that the housing and shoulders show no deformation or misalignment.

  1. Hubs

Assess their wear to determine whether they can continue to be used or should be replaced.
